About the Author
Gretta Curran Browne was born in Dublin city where she spent some of her childhood years in the notorious Goldenbridge orphanage. Later she was transferred to a second orphanage in Preston in England, which was less harsh, and where, due to one special nun, she became acquainted with the magic of storytelling. In her teenage years she moved to London to study Drama, working as a telephonist at night to pay her rent and attending Drama school in the day: after which she spent some years working full time in theatre and occasionally in television. Her first attempts at professional writing began after her two children were born, and she became a full-time mother, writing at night when the world and her children were asleep. She began with two short stories, both of which won prizes. She then began her first novel, `Tread Softly On My Dream’s, based on the true story of the young Irish hero, Robert Emmet. Published by Headline and critically acclaimed by the Press, Tread Softly On My Dreams was acquired by the University of Notre Dame in the US, and The Princess Grace Irish Library in the palace of Monaco. This was followed by her second Irish novel, Fire On The Hill and later followed by her first contemporary novel, Ghosts In Sunlight. Gretta’s writing career was interrupted in full flow when her son broke his back in an accident and needed her care for some years. Now fully recovered, her son is a successful young actor and Gretta has returned to her passion for writing. She has just completed her new Historical novel, By Eastern Windows, based again on a true story, set primarily in Scotland and India, and has already started work on the sequel The Far Horizon, set primarily in early Australia. Gretta is married to a lawyer and lives in London.

Fire on the hill - almost wonderful - it would be nice to be able to read the rest of it - Kindle edition really disappointing

The book itself is fantastic. Once you start it you won't be able to put it down. However, at the end of the kindle version it talks about the sequel "A World Apart".
If you look on Amazon, Google etc. you will find no reference to this book. So I went back to the Kindle version and found the note at the front of the e-book as follows:
"Although this work was originally published as a lenghty major book under one title, Fire on The Hill, it is now published in eBook edition under two separate titles and ISBNs: Fire on the Hill (ISBN 9780955820854) and A World Apart (no sign of this book or an ISBN for it)."
I would not mind too much if I didn't have to find out that this original book was in one volume if I was able to find a copy of the second book, but it would appear that this second volume is not available anywhere.
So this is the reason that I rated this item as a five star book because I loved the book. However, I'm very very annoyed with Amazon or the Publishers or whoever it is that tries to be clever like this.
If at any point I manage to locate a version of the rest of this book I will be glad to update this review.

Good history,too much unnessesary sex

Good beginning of the Michael story, but it followed too much like a Harliquin romance. Too much sex added to the history. Loved the sequel, "A World Apart." "Fire on the Hill" should be more like the first and third. Wanted to recommend the trilogy to my book club, but this one ruined it.

This is a very well documented book with very little embellishment , it takes you away into the depths of Ireland, you would almost think you were in the Wicklow Mountains yourself, the descriptions of the colours and of the suns rising and setting makes you feel as if you are there, and as soothing as this is your blood boils at the description of how the Irish people are treated in their own county.
I am on the last of the three books and it is just as riveting, a really good read,
