Short but sweet

This is the story of one of the side characters is Ms LaValle's previous novel, The Runaway Countess; this is the sister's story. Cat's husband left her soon after they were married after catching her in a compromising position with a notorious rake and he has stayed away for 5 years but now he has returned because he needs an heir. It turns out Cat was not involved with the rake but was protecting the reputation of a friend who was engaged to a Duke and even though her husband knew her reason for being in the compromising position he was angry and unable to forgive her for putting her friend's reputation before his.
This story is a novella so the story line moves quickly and very satisfactorily to the happy ending but unlike a lot of other novellas these characters are well developed and the story does not seem rushed.

Good stand alone novella

I originally read this novella in the excellent anthology Three Weddings and a Murder. At the time I was unaware that it was based on characters introduced in Ms. LaValle's first novel. This is completely a stand alone novel.

While I respect other reviewers opinions, I must disagree, to an extent. The entire plot is woven around The Misunderstanding. This is fairly typical. Did the Hero overreact? Yeah. Does his wife still love him? Yeah. Did I want them to get down to fixing The Misunderstanding? Absolutely. I did not feel the heroine forgave her husband too easily or without warrant. She was hurt, of course, but still very much in love. And for all the grandstanding our stupidly stubborn hero is a man, after all. He tries to show he is still madly in love with his wife, but he is prideful and ashamed and mucks it up for a while. Personally, I liked this sweet story very much and will purchase the author's full length book based on the beautiful writing. Keep up the good work!

What I Liked:

This book is extremely short - novella short - but I really liked it! You all know how much I enjoy historical romance novels. This one was uploaded to NetGalley recently, despite being released last year in October. While this one isn't a full-length novel, I enjoyed the story and the characters and the cute romance!

Catherine's husband Jamie, the Marquess of Foster, finally returns home after five years. When he left five years earlier, the two of them were not on good terms. Jamie was angry because he thought that Cat did something to hurt him, while Cat was angry at him for believing such a thing. After he left, he never contacted her.

So when he returns, at the beginning of this novella, Cat is very frustrated with him. He doesn't believe her about the thing that they argued over (five years ago), he doesn't want to talk to her about anything, and he seems cold towards her. Cat still has feelings of love and attraction towards him, but he can't shake his uncaring attitude. She decides she wants a divorce.

Jamie is still hurt over the supposed betrayal of his wife. He returns home because of a funeral, I believe, but he doesn't want to deal with his wife. His mistake is not communicating with her effectively, because her mention of the divorce surprises him.

Basically, it takes the duration of the story to remind the two of them how much they loved and love each other.Cat and Jamie settle their differences and come to terms with the past. There is a happy ending! The romance is sweet and steamy at the same time. There's no doubt that both of them are still very attracted to each other, even after five years.

I really like both of the characters! Cat is strong and defensive and possess a tough will. Jamie is strong and defensive and loving. Both are stubborn, but both do things to keep their marriage together. I'm pleased with the story and the romance - and the ending!

What I Did Not Like:

I sort of wish that I had known beforehand that this was a novella, and not a full-length novel! When I reached the end, I was like, THAT'S IT!? Of course, that's my fault, but I still thing a full-length novel of this story would have been more... impressive!

And I never fully understood what Cat supposedly did to betray Jamie and make him so angry that he left to sail around the world for five years. She says she didn't do the thing, and eventually, he believes her, but what exactly is the "thing"? I have ideas, but I don't really know for sure. Somehow, I missed that!

Would I Recommend It:

If you're in the mood for a really short, sweet, historical romance novella, then yes! You can't go wrong with this one, because it's really short and cute!

such a HUGE disappointment for such a TINY book...

The book is VERY SMALL. In fact it's TINY. There are not many words in this book series though the content is interesting and, in places, even powerful. I would, however, not recommend it above meatier offerings and would suggest you select something on the lines of Moody's Handbook on Theology or the like. I know they're very different offerings, but tiny books that cost a lot annoy me. TD, you really should group your Ephesians booklets together and give us value for money (or should that be value for prosperity?); that way I'd have only been disappointed once, not six times. Could have been named "Six pillows from Ephesians".

About the Author
Douglass C. North is co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science. He is Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and Bartlett Burnap Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Professor North received the John R. Commons Award in 1992. He is author of eleven books, including Institutions, Institutional Change, and Economic Performance (1990), Understanding the Process of Economic Change (2005), and co-author, with John Joseph Wallis and Barry R. Weingast, of Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

John Joseph Wallis is Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1981 and had a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago. Professor Wallis is an economic historian who specializes in the public finance of American governments and more generally in the relation between the institutional co-development of governments and economics. His large-scale research on American state finance and institutions has been supported by the National Science Foundation.

Steven B. Webb worked at the World Bank for twenty-one years as an economist and advisor on policy research, evaluation and operations for Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions. He currently serves as a consultant to the Bank. Dr Webb's specializations include political economy, decentralization, public finance, central banks and monetary policy and economic history. His publications include Public Sector Reform - What Works and Why (2008), Achievements and Challenges in Decentralization (2000) and Voting for Reform: The Politics of Adjustment in New Democracies (1994, edited with Stephan Haggard).

Barry R. Weingast is the Ward C. Krebs Family Professor in the Department of Political Science and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1977. Professor Weingast spent ten years at Washington University in St. Louis in the Department of Economics and the School of Business. The recipient of the Riker Prize, the Heinz Eulau Prize and the James Barr Memorial Prize, he has also worked extensively with the World Bank and the US Agency for International Development. Professor Weingast co-authored Analytical Narratives (1998) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Political Economy (2006).

Government-sponsored monopoly corruption nations

"In The Shadow of Violence", ed. by Douglass North, et. al., (Jan. 2013). This book is everything about "Limited Access Orders" (LAO). So what's an LAO? According to the authors, an LAO is a "way or organizing a society" whereby "developing societies limit violence through the manipulation of economic interests by the political system in order to create rents so that powerful groups and individuals find it in their interest to refrain from using violence" (p.3). Essentially, the authors spin the old adage "There is no honor amongst thieves" into "thieves may find it economically beneficial to engage in truces to avoid extinction." Sort of like when the La Cosa Nostra mobsters of the 1950s tried to carve up franchise territories that could be controlled by a particular crime `family member' without having to fear violent competition from other `frenimies'. These co-authors take this LAO `developing' families concept beyond the familiar Al Capone and Mexican cartel `protection racket' business models. They expand their LAO concept to include "monopolies." Unfortunately, they don't differentiate between `natural' versus `political' monopolies. Essentially, a `natural' monopoly is one whereby an inventor develops a business/product that outshines (out sells) anything similar on the market, until someone else comes along and develops a better mousetrap. Whereas a `political' monopoly is one whereby dictators or oligarchs are able to entice/bribe some government entity to give them a non-competitive monopoly control over some segment of the economy. Such as the lucrative monopolies that Filipino family members of Pres. Marcos were able to obtain from their patron. The authors should have really differentiated between these two types of monopolies. Besides studying the LAO structure of The Philippines, the authors discuss similar corrupt LAO monopolies in Bangladesh (and Pakistan), Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Mozambique, Zambia, and South Korea (of Pres. Park). Would I give this book to my mother (or any one's mom) to read? No - but maybe if I wanted her to fall asleep more speedily; I mean, it's a doosy dozer; not really captivating reading. For economists and policy wonks. Similar to, but much more statistical and detailed than "Why Nations Fail" by Daron Acemoglu.

An Intriguing Explanation of Violence for the Academic Crowd

In the Shadow of Violence uses a framework previously developed by Douglass North, John Wallis, and Barry Weingast in previous work to nine developing countries to illustrate how political control of economic resources is used to limit violence and coordinate coalitions of powerful organizations.

The central idea of the book is that development is difficult, not because politicians are socially and morally bankrupt, but that economic institutions are manipulated in the attempt to provide stability and political order. Politicians end up spending so much money on these socially constructed low-access orders that there's little left for development.

While the ideas themselves are intriguing, this book reads as though it was intended for upper level graduate students, rather than the general readership. I often had to stop just to figure out if what I read made any sense and/or reread sections.

This book is not for the novice or someone who dabbles in political economy/development politics. What I do look is that all of the case studies seem to correspond nicely to the framework outlined in the front of the book: going from the least developed to most developed countries they include.

I selected this book while still part of the way through the recent work by Pippa Norris Making Democratic Governance Work: How Regimes Shape Prosperity, Welfare, and Peacealthough I was not very familiar with the contributions by North at that time. The contrast between the approach of the political scientist (Norris) and the economist (North) is acute. Whilst reading for my first BA in Economics I had selected Development Economics as one of my specialist areas and later became familiar with the work of, and the author, Lord (Peter) Bauer.

In the Shadow of Violence utilizes a Case Study approach which does not sit easily with me, having been trained in the rigorous discipline of economics as is traditionally taught.

I found that the quality of the case studies varied considerably with authors and I was irritated with much repetition and verbosity with some more that others.

That aside, I found the hypothesis of the authors interesting and relevant but at the same time I felt that the subjects under the microscope lacked real operational applicability.

If one looks at Norris' work, she backs up her claims with research studies from other fields as well as her own while the contributors to the North volume repeatedly talk about rents, but their papers are too general and ill-defined to be considered proof. Indeed, one is oft reminded of Popper's dictum, that a theory that explains everything, explains nothing.

I was also struck by the fact that the papers consider states which are said to be at various points on a closed-open access spectrum but do not include problematic states like Zimbabwe which would be a challenge to the mode of analysis.

Overall I do consider this book to provide some valuable insights but it needs to refine and clarify and make operational some of the central concepts such that a more rigorous set of research studies can be carried out.
