Memories of Summer: When Baseball Was an Art, and Writing about it a Game, by Roger Kahn

Acclaimed baseball writer and bestselling author Roger Kahn gives us a memoir of his Brooklyn childhood, a recollection of a life in journalism, and a record of personal acquaintance with the greatest ballplayers of several eras.

His father had a passion for the Dodgers; his mother’s passion was for poetry. Somehow, young Roger managed to blend both loves in a career that encompassed writing about sports for the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, the SATURDAY EVENING POST, ESQUIRE, and TIME. Kahn recalls the great personalities of a golden era—Leo Durocher, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Red Smith, Dick Young, and many more—and recollects the wittiest lines from forty years in dugouts, press boxes, and newsrooms.

Often hilarious, always precise about action on the field and off, MEMORIES OF SUMMER is an enduring classic about how baseball met literature to the benefit of both.

Praise for Roger Kahn:

"As a kid, I loved sports first and writing second, and loved everything Roger Kahn wrote. As an adult, I love writing first and sports second, and love Roger Kahn even more." —Pulitzer Prize winner, David Maraniss

"He can epitomize a player with a single swing of the pen." —TIME magazine

"Roger Kahn is the best baseball writer in the business." —Stephen Jay Gould, New York Review of Books

"Kahn has the almost unfair gift of easy, graceful writing." —BOSTON HERALD

A poignant volume that reads like a novel.
By A Customer
Mr. Kahn turns back the clock to the days when baseball was the true American pastime. His anecdotes and interviews about Mantle, Mays, and Early Wynn bring these individuals to life more than any statistics possibly could. His love of his father is written about in such a profound manner that is timeless. In all a classic piece of Americana that hopefully will be read fifty years from now.

Great man, great book
By A Customer
I was fortunate enough to receive a preview copy of this book a few weeks before its release because I was interviewing Mr. Kahn on a radio interview program.
As soon as I started reading, I was hooked. Although I was not alive during the 1950's, I have always been fascinated with baseball during that era, particularly the lovable Brooklyn Dodgers. Kahn's latest book does such a wonderful job of describing what it was like to be around baseball every day in that bygone era.
The easiest interview I have ever done was that one I did with Roger. His love for baseball was evident from the first question I asked him. His insight gained from covering the Dodgers in the 1950's is something every baseball fan could use. In this season of home runs, the average fan is once again starting to appreciate baseball. Roger Kahn will make you appreciate it even more.

A story so good you'd believe it was fiction
By J. Bowman
Let me explain this way: Growing up, I was never a fan of the Dodgers, they were my Giants' rival. This book made me a fan. In fact, this book made me long to be the kind of fan Khan was, want to be a roadie for a team I barely knew of beyond a few big names a week before. It revived my slumped interest in baseball overall, and taught me a lot that I had never considered about the sport.

There's not one place in this book where names and stats are thrown at the reader; every name and every statistic is a story, some seen from the wide eyes of a child and some with the reverence of an adult around his human heroes. Neither is this book a whitewash nor the disillusionment of heroes not living up to their image: Everyone is alive and fresh, everyone has a meticulously researched backstory told with a folksy sense of humor about their all-too-human foibles. Mixed into the stories are comments from the people involved from interviews many years later, when they can look back with more honesty, written in seamlessly. Of course not everyone's stories match - instead of choosing a truth, Khan just lays a few sides out, lets the reader feel some of the disharmony that occasionally shook the teams, without stopping to exhaustively debate the reality of each.

It's very obvious that Khan is an astute master of language, someone who spent fifty years not only writing stories daily but perfecting his craft. The emotion he pours into every page never comes off tacky or trite, it's manly but not chauvinistic, and filled with a lifelong boyish wonder. Most of all, the retelling of each game is something special, breathing life back into an afternoon decades past. He manages to create an incredibly visceral picture of the highs and lows, tossing in more stories to bridge the plays, and inspires plenty of envy. It never gets old, and no technique is overused enough or story long enough to grate.

The book certainly shifts dramatically with the move away from Brooklyn, slows down a bit and comes back to earth as it accelerates through the years, but I never lost interest in it. I wish this book hadn't been stolen from me; someday I'll find it again and finish the last few chapters. I really do want to hear the last word - and then pass it on to another Dodger fan who just doesn't know it yet.

To Tame A Dragon (The Reluctant Bride Collection Book 2), by Megan Bryce

Come back to a time when manners are everything and rules are made to never be broken. Come back to a time when men are in charge and women do what they are told. . .
Yeah, that never happened.
Welcome to Megan Bryce's Regencyland, where ladies with backbone get what they want. Where a woman can thumb her nose at rules and care little for convention, and yet somehow, unexpectedly and most reluctantly, find love.

To Tame A Dragon

Lady Amelia Delaney is known for her sharp tongue, no-nonsense attitude, and sizable fortune. Numerous suitors have tried to win her hand for the money, for the challenge, and for a rather unfortunate bet. She knows the unflattering reasons behind her numerous proposals– can she ever accept that a man would want to marry her just for herself?

Jameson Pendrake is a devil-may-care dandy who cares for naught but fun and fashion. But behind his laughing green eyes lies a dark history, and he calls off his wedding because of his fear of repeating the past. He can not simply give up on the idea of marriage– a wife is the best defense against the yearly crop of scheming mothers and their frilly daughters. But to allay his fears he needs a woman strong enough to laugh in the face of his past. A woman unflappable, unwavering, and unbroken. He knows just the woman. The trick, it seems, is in getting her to accept.

Light, feel-good romance
By LaylaReader
Similar to her book `To Catch a Spinster', this story is about a strong woman who has no desire to be tied down.

It is a light-hearted, feel-good book and perhaps not for history purists.

Lady Amelia Delaney is an heiress who values her independence, regularly turning down marriage proposals in a way that earns her the nickname of the `dragon'. She has been close to her brother's friend Jameson Pendrake since childhood and has no qualms about telling him what a cad he is when he cancels his wedding to the sweet Miss Underwood.

In the wake of his `scandalous' behaviour, Jameson suddenly realises that the perfect woman has been in his sights all along: his best friend, Amelia. He admires, respects and loves her; she knows all of his demons and accepts him for the person he is. The trouble is that Amelia finds his proposal utterly ridiculous.
His challenge is to make Amelia see how perfectly matched they are.

Sorry, this one missed the mark even more than the first!
By Past Romance
After reading the first book in this series, "To Catch A Spinster," I was left with an awful taste in my mouth. As much as I wanted to read a familiar, well-known author in an attempt to cleanse my Kindle pallet, I decided to give Ms. Bryce the benefit of the doubt and try the second book. I already had it in my library as a previous free selection, so what did I have to lose?

Oh my. I didn't "lose" anything, but I did waste precious reading time, which is even worse.

This book is just very poorly written. The plot is unlikely and frankly, nonsensical. The ending is just...well, odd and unsatisfying. The characters have very few redeeming qualities. There are so many historical romance books out there, even as free selections, that are head and shoulders above this poor attempt at the genre.

Amelia has been given the nickname "the dragon" by the men of the ton. Apparently, it is because she is rather assertive and turns down proposals with regularity. How this makes her a dragon, I'm not quite sure. I'd call it being choosy. At some point, there was some man that attempted to take advantage of her and get her in a compromising situation in order to gain her fortune, but the whole topic is only vaguely discussed. Why even bother? It doesn't appear to really have an impact on her personality.

After bailing out a long-time family friend from a potentially ruinous situation, she finds herself the object of his affection. Lord Nighting, although handsome (although he's never really described in detail so I guess we have to take the author's word for it), is irresponsible and often reprehensible. Not exactly a adventageous match.

Readers are supposed to believe this rake has an epiphany and finds himself convinced Amelia is the woman he's destined to marry. After all, she can keep him out of trouble. Oh sure, that's a good reason to marry someone. He begins to pursue her and attempt to convince her to accept. Of course she refuses (this is, after all called the RELUCTANT BRIDE collection).

Suddenly, she changes her mind. An uneventful marriage follows. It is just one let down after another with this book. There really didn't seem a valid reason for me to push the "page forward" button on my Kindle other than getting this book over with so that I could move onto something better.

I'd suggest you bypass this book. Even "free" is too high a price.

3.5 stars
By Jessantonia
I was a little hesitant about reading this after being disappointed by "to catch a spinster," but when I saw I could borrow this book for free on my kindle, I decided to give it a shot. The overall story was better than "to catch a spinster" but it didnt have the magic the first half of "to catch a spinster" had with h/h. Although some silly things happened in this book, I was laughing out loud - it was just so funny, even if some scenes were unbelievable. One example was the four Underwood brothers proposing to Amelia - hilarious! Another is Jameson's horse and cane - lol.

This book though has something I wish the last book had so that the author had better reasons to fill up the pages than just focusing all the attention on h/h - this book had a second story with Miss Underwood - the woman Jameson broke up his engagement with. Amelia was determined to find her a more suitable husband and though it was predictable who she would end up with, it was a good choice.

***SPOILER - however, I think it was best to find Miss Underwood a husband first before Amelia married Jameson.***

Also this book had a very good reason why the bride should be reluctant yet unlike the heroine in the first book who should have given in sooner - this heroine did instead! I think Amelia gave in too soon after all she's been through and knowing Jameson. Also while the affection between the two was undeniable - I dont know if they were in love. I did like Amelia and Jameson together, even though I felt they were more friends than lovers - or maybe this is due to the lack of sex scenes - but either way you could tell they would be content in their marriage.

Overall, I though the story was ok. I might be being a little unfair since I kept comparing Amelia and Jameson to Olivia and Nathaniel (the h/h of to catch a spinster) but it's just that their love was much more believable than Amelia and Jameson - even though Amelia and Jameson had known each other since childhood. (Although Amelia was definitely the more considerate, smarter, kind and loyal of the two heroines). But I just wish Amelia and Jameson's love was more developed - neither had secret feelings for the other - Jameson suddenly has this bright idea that they will suit because she has a backbone and he wont dare hurt her - not because he finally realizes he's in love. And Amelia eventual thinks they would suit because they do get along well and no one knows her better than him - not because she realizes she's in love either so it wasnt very romantic for me. I mean I think Robin - Amelia's brother - had more romantic feelings for Jameson - and neither one is gay - but Robin's fierce loyalty to Jameson, had me thinking at times!

In retrospect though I dont regret reading this series - despite some frustrations and disappointments. If a third book comes out, I'll most likely read it - this author does give us some moments worth reading about.

The Gypsy Hill Murders (The Ralph Chalmers Mysteries Book 1), by P.J. Thurbin

The Gypsy Hill Murders is the work of P. J. Thurbin, a new writer to the fictional crime scene. He has a unique and fast moving style that will appeal to the reader who likes mysteries that are in the genre of those by John Grisham and M.C. Beaton.
His book has all the ingredients that one would expect to find in a classic murder mystery. It is centered on an ivy covered Victorian house set within the campus of a modern University just outside London. A group of five academics find themselves embroiled in a series of vicious attacks that are linked to incidents that took place 100 years earlier.
The main character, Ralph Chalmers, a Professor of International Business, attempts to unravel the links between a 100 year old skeleton found on the site and a series of recent attacks in the University, while at the same time courting an old flame from his days as a student at Cambridge University. Inspector Linham and his Sergeant Wilson also strive to apprehend the villains and lend an air of authenticity to the investigations.
As the plot thickens, various members of the academic staff are seen to have motives that would also implicate them in the events that unfold. The atmosphere of jealousy and mistrust is stimulated by the character of the head caretaker, Jack Welsh, a retired army Master at Arms who has compelling reasons for wanting to unravel the mystery.
The book is fast moving in that the plot moves to Australia, France, Monte Carlo, and the world of diamond trading, while delving into the backgrounds and lives of the main characters. A final twist will leave the reader surprised at how greed and desperation can result in tragedy.
Thurbin manages to entertain by depicting the frailties of his main characters in all too familiar ways, while at the same time adding just enough intrigue to keep the reader turning the pages. This novel is for anyone who likes the thrill of a good mystery with plenty of action coupled with the element of surprise.

The worst book I've read in a long long time
By General Dogsbody
This has been the worst book I've read, or tried to read, in years. I really tried to read it, and I will usually finish a book, even if I don't really like it. But poor sentence structure, grammatical mistakes, spelling errors, and the flattest characters this side of a steamroller made it too painful to finish it. The more I read, the worse it got. I can deal with an implausible story, but this had NO redeeming features at all. I'm wondering where the good reviews came from, what other books these people have read that they would even consider any rating over a one star for this. I would have given it zero starts had this been possible.

Can't believe there are more in this series
By Betsy
I thought this might be a good book because of the references to the Great War, but I was quite disappointed in the characters, the multitude of victims, the poor writing, and the naivete of Ralph Chalmers. I was especially appalled by the author's reference to the movie, "Lawrence of Arabia". The Arabs called Lawrence "A-u-r-e-n-s" not LOWENS, and it is Omar Sharif, not Sherrif. Not a good beginning to a series.

Pleasant but not Intense Academic Novel
By drkhimxz
A pleasant light read without much that is intriguing. Unusual for a mystery, there is not much of a puzzle, not much effective investigation, and no hero or heroine. The central figure, Professor Ralph Chalmers is a likeable chap (well it is an English novel), we are told a fine scholar, definitely a 'try to get along' fellow, an appealing sort of a guy, but he is simply 'there' for other people to bounce their ideas against. It is an academic novel in which our hero is the acted upon by the chief administrator in his life as well as by his friends but not the instigator of action. Of course, the real life of an academic, and the author does capture a bit of this, is rather dull to outsiders being concerned with learning often quite arcane matters (to the layman) and interacting with the 'consumers' of his services (students) in ways that can only be judged decades down the road....if then. In this first book of the series, there is a death labelled 'accidental' early in the book and, we learn a bit later, there is the hope of finding a long buried treasure, but from there on nobody seems to have any sort of handle on the why and the what of what seem to be disparate events happening to different people for different reasons. The writing is of a placid, certainly not of intense, sort, and the few central characters neatly characterized although not terribly interesting.
It's difficult to emerge with a recommendation on the book. I found it, as I have said, pleasant but not intensely involving. I have already acquired some others in the series because there is a distinct role in my reading for such a book on occasions. I should think it will appeal to any mystery story reader when they do not want to be drawn into an emotionally stimulating book. I would not commend it, of course, to any who lean to the hard-boiled school or who need a protagonist who is in the market for 'hot' ( I think that is the term today) men or women, or scenes in which there is an effort to 'sex up' the book.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2014: In Hollow City, Ransom Riggs continues the story that mesmerized readers in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. With their island home compromised, and Miss Peregrine trapped in her bird state, Jacob and the other peculiars flee into the larger world and find themselves in war-torn 1940’s London. On those broken streets, with "blacked out windows staring like lidless eyes," Jacob learns to trust himself, finds comfort in belonging, and falls over the precipice into love. As in his earlier novel, Hollow City is filled with eerily fascinating vintage photographs, and like a seasoned magician Riggs seamlessly incorporates them into a story already so well established in many ways that such a feat seems remarkable.--Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Listeners are hurled head first into Riggs's stormy seas, right where he abandoned us at the end of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. The children, now loaded into three rowboats, have narrowly escaped the dangers that invaded their island, rescued Miss Peregrine from a weight-driven submarine, and now only need to row more than eight kilometers to mainland England. It will take all of the children's peculiar abilities to even make it to the shore—which is only the first stop on their near-impossible journey. Narrator Kirby Heyborne's pacing is deliberate and measured, matching the real-time pacing of the book, which takes place over the course of only a few days. The voices of our Peculiar friends are as quirky as the characters themselves, and are exceptionally well done. But much of the magic of these books is lost without immediate access to the unusual pictures which inspired the story, even though they are available on an included PDF. Recommended for libraries with the first audiobook or as an accompaniment to the print version.—Chani Craig, Great Falls Middle/Turners Falls High School, Montague, MA

From Booklist
Hard on the heels of Riggs’ first hugely successful effort, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2011), comes this equally creepy sequel, which picks up where the first book left off. Jacob and the 10 peculiar children are now headed to war-torn London (the year is 1940), desperate to find a way to release Miss Peregrine from the spell that has trapped her in the body of a bird. But the doughty band is headed into terrible danger, for the metropolis is overrun by evil wights and their minions, the fiendish hollowgasts. Together, the villains have imprisoned all but two of the surviving ymbrines: the missing Miss Wren and the transformed Miss Peregrine. Can Jacob and friends find the former, and can she then help them? Ah, therein lies the tale. Like the first volume, this one is generously illustrated with peculiar period photographs that capture and enhance the eerie mood and mode. Fans will be pleased with this second volume and downright delighted to know that a third in the series is in the offing. Grades 6-9. --Michael Cart

The 2nd book to the peculiar series, has a lot more "action" than the 1st book, could not put it down, forever a fan!
By gummybear26
This is the 2nd book to the peculiar children series, the 1st book was a bit "normal" and the ending is where things start to get peculiar. This book is full of all the peculiar children...and adults peculiars I've been waiting for. It is full of action and it is where Jacob starts getting into the full abilities of his abilities though truthfully his full ability does not come out until the last book (its awesome). His love for Emma grows, his relationship with the peculiar children gets stronger and he becomes the "leader" that helps save and rescue them and he kind of takes over for miss peregrine after she disappears. If you read the 1st book and found it interesting but a bit lacking or boring you will not be disappointed with this one because it where the action of them traveling the world (through loops so they don't age forward) in order to stop Carl and save peculiardom. This book is where I just couldn't put it down and stayed up late at night thinking just one more page. You will not be disappointed!

A bridge book to stretch the story into an unnecessary trilogy
By J'aime
2.5 Stars. The first book of Miss Peregrine didn’t blow me away, but it had enough potential that I wanted to continue the story. Unfortunately, the second book failed to do so. Hollow City reminded me a lot of the first half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – a lot of moving around avoiding bad guys with very little progress. For HP, that was okay because readers were brought to that point by 6 books of character development and exciting stories. Almost the entirety of Hollow City follows the children, that we hardly know, on the run from wights.

I read the first 50 pages of this book and then put it down for a couple weeks because it just didn’t pull me in. When I finally got back to it, I realized why - the photographs. Including weird vintage photos was a cool concept in the first book, inspiring some delightful characters. However, it becomes extremely limiting here. The author forces the narrative around the photos instead of around his protagonists. This means a lot of random encounters that don’t progress the plot, but allow another photo to be included. That’d be okay if there was some character development, but there isn’t. It’s mostly a cat and mouse game until the very end when the story is finally given some meat (and the focus narrows to Jacob & Emma).

Overall, I thought this was a disappointment – a bridge book meant to stretch a thin story even further. Readers can simply read the last 3-4 chapters and have all they need to go into the next book. I’ll read the last book because I’m curious to see where Jacob ends up, but I truly hope the author focuses on his protagonists and not the strange photos.

Final note: Usually I keep my reviews to the content of a book, but these deserve a little extra recognition. The hardcover editions of these books are really beautiful. The paper is thicker than standard, with small embellishments to the design and the size is a bit more compact. They have a weight to them that underlies excellent quality. I wish more books came this well done.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was
By Paula
When I read Peregrine's Peculiar Children, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I wasn't disappointed with Hollow City either. They're both exciting and adventurous fantasies, involving "peculiar children; all who have peculiar gifts or talents, and are the wards of mistresses who can change into birds.

One might think this would be better suited to children...and I think children would really enjoy the books, but I'M 59, and I really enjoyed the books. I'm now reading the 3rd book in the series.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From Edward Rutherfurd, the grand master of the historical novel, comes a dazzling epic about the magnificent city of Paris. Moving back and forth in time, the story unfolds through intimate and thrilling tales of self-discovery, divided loyalty, and long-kept secrets. As various characters come of age, seek their fortunes, and fall in and out of love, the novel follows nobles who claim descent from the hero of the celebrated poem The Song of Roland; a humble family that embodies the ideals of the French Revolution; a pair of brothers from the slums behind Montmartre, one of whom works on the Eiffel Tower as the other joins the underworld near the Moulin Rouge; and merchants who lose everything during the reign of Louis XV, rise again in the age of Napoleon, and help establish Paris as the great center of art and culture that it is today. With Rutherfurd’s unrivaled blend of impeccable research and narrative verve, this bold novel brings the sights, scents, and tastes of the City of Light to brilliant life.

Amazon.com Review
Essay by Edward Rutherfurd

I was eight when I fell in love with Paris. Though my family was British, we had many French cousins, and that year we all went over to Paris to see them.

There was the magical drive around floodlit Paris; the river trip, the walk down the Champs-Elysees. The smell of Gauloises cigarettes--now gone--and French coffee, the taste of real French cooking, a far cry from the food I knew. I took pictures from the top of the Eiffel Tower, and gazed in rapture at the Napoleonic army of toy soldiers in Les Invalides. And then there was the sound of my cousins speaking French--charming, sensuous, mysterious.

But it was something unexpected that impressed me most.

My French cousin Isabelle was driving me and my father's elderly aunt. By mistake, she made an illegal turn. The police pounced. Isabelle apologized. The policeman was stony-faced. Then Isabelle had an inspiration.

"You see, Monsieur, I was taking my aunt from England for a drive," she explained.

The policeman bent down, looked at the little old lady on the back seat, stood at attention and saluted. "Passez, Madame," he said gallantly.

We've all encountered occasional rudeness in France, but throw yourself on a French person's mercy, and their sense of chivalry usually kicks in. That's the special charm of France.

I stayed with my cousins often after that. One Parisian family lived just up the street from Proust's childhood home, and only yards from where the Statue of Liberty was constructed. Others had an old house in Fontainebleau, with a veranda straight out of a Manet painting, and family stories that went back to Napoleonic times. Others lived near the Bastille, or in Hemingway's Montparnasse, or in the Latin Quarter--wonderfully convenient when, as a teenager, I needed to sneak into the revolutionary riots in 1968. All these places found their way into my novel.

The son of a laborer taught me street-fighting--my background for the Gascon family. I knew an old monarchist priest who still held the French kings sacred; an aristocrat who'd known Chagall, and a virulent Marxist student. I lived with professional families whose shared memories went back to the days of the Belle Epoque and beyond. These were the sources of my characters and stories.

And as a young man, I also fell in love in Paris, with an older woman, which left me with memories of Neuilly when the horse chestnuts are in blossom, and of walks in the Parisian dawn, and an old house with parquet floors that creaked, and the smell of fresh croissants and cafe au lait in the morning.

But if Marcel Proust found the past brought vividly back to life by the taste of a madeleine, I too have a taste and smell to share; of eating frogs legs at the age of eight, and being sick afterwards . . . I still can't bear the smell. I'll stick to the croissants and cafe au lait!

From Booklist
Rutherfurd (London, 1997, and New York, 2009) serves up yet another meaty historical saga centering on a major international city. Since the city in question this time is Paris, the repast is sumptuous indeed. As usual, he sweeps the reader along through the centuries, recounting all the most significant transformative events as the City of Light evolves from its humble origins as a Roman trading post to the cultural epicenter of Western civilization. Utilizing his trademark combination of real-life and fictional characters, he stitches their individual stories and experiences together in order to humanize and personalize the emergence of a mighty metropolis over a period of 2,000 years. As with all great cities, both Paris and its citizens endured their share of setbacks, humiliations, and tragedies, but these necessary growing pains often resulted in substantial rewards. Anyone who has ever visited Paris or desires to do so will definitely want to dig into this movable feast. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Both Paris, the venerable City of Light, and Rutherfurd, the undisputed master of the multigenerational historical saga, shine in this sumptuous urban epic that is sure to be another best-seller for the prolific author. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
“Neatly plotted tales that choose a place and weave through its centuries of history are the specialty of this bestselling Cambridge-educated author. . . . Rutherfurd’s prose is so clean and unembellished, the dialogue so fluid and true to the era it’s spoken in that . . . the more you read, the more you want. The characters are memorable. . . . Hemmingway-esque. . . . The book is delightfully filmic.”
—Gazette (Montreal)

“The amount of information conveyed in the course of this long narrative is impressive and (as far as I can tell) accurate. . . . [Paris] is highly accomplished and almost always absorbing and entertaining. The characters are nicely delineated. . . . One aspect of the novel impressed me mightily: Rutherfurd's skill in keeping so complex a narrative clear and comprehensible. I hope this does not sound patronising: Paris strikes me as popular fiction at its best.”
—Sydney Morning Herald

“For his eighth novel, Edward Rutherfurd sticks faithfully to his bestselling formula. . . . The individual stories vary in interest, but once again Rutherfurd proves his real knack is with history, in detail and sweeping overviews alike, to give genuinely fascinating re-creations of Parisian life through the ages.”
—Daily Mail (UK)

“Edward Rutherfurd is known for his sweeping epics that tell the history and growth of great cities through the lives of their citizens.”
—StarTribune

“Rutherford has crafted several interesting characters. . . . He beautifully invokes the South of France and the influx of Americans to that region, and equally writes exceedingly well about the French Resistance.”
—The Evening Herald (Dublin)

"You will savour the novel even if you haven’t been there. Like Paris, Paris never disappoints.”
—Vancouver Sun

Masterful Illumination of the City of Lights
By Holly Weiss
Edward Rutherfurd is undoubtedly the reigning master of the multi-period epic novel. Paris: The Novel showcases his impeccable research and narrative talent. This sweeping novel covers 700 years of one of the most famous global cities. Paris's well-deserved fascination is magnificently illuminated. Triumphant as the city's architecture and culture, the book is a propulsive march through the geography, society and history of Paris.

We follow a few families from 1261 and the building of Notre Dame Cathedral to the student revolt of 1968. Thus we view Paris through the eyes of the people who walked its streets, viewed its art, fought its wars, debated its philosophers and constructed its monuments. Their stories and relationships with the city come alive. Why do we associate plaster of Paris, French onion soup and the greatest wines in the world with the city? Rutherfurd tells us with each meticulously written human story.

The main player in the story is Paris itself. We learn about the building of the Eiffel tower, the Moulin Rouge, the impressionist painters and poets, the Palace of Versailles, the violence of the French Revolution, the couture clothing industry and countless more French associations. Paris's coat of arms contains a ship with the city's Latin motto," Whatever the storm, the ship sails on." Your visit to Paris will be clear sailing with splendid views.

Brimming with historical detail and intellectually stimulating, the book delivers the human experience of the great city through absolutely enjoyable storytelling. "Especially at times of war and upheaval--there should be people of culture and humanity to protect our heritage." Paris: The Novel does just that.

A lackluster portrait of the City of Light
By Maine Colonial
I remember reading Rutherfurd's first historical epic, Sarum, and being swept away by the story of Salisbury, England and its families through the centuries. Since then, Rutherfurd has written several more of these historical novels, about Russia, Ireland, London and New York.

Rutherfurd has developed a sort of formula for these novels. He takes a few families and follows their generations through the centuries. The families tend to be from varying levels of society, so that their stories can give a fuller view of life in the particular location of the story. Different family members will be involved in some way with key events in the location's history, and quite often the families have interactions or relationships with each other throughout the history.

In this book, the families are the highborn de Cygnes; the Le Sourds, pitted against the de Cygnes again and again throughout the ages; the laborer/artisan Gascons; the commerce-minded Blanchards; the Jewish Jacobs. For some reason not clear to me, Rutherfurd has chosen to skip around in time, rather than follow a chronological order. Not only do you jump from one set of characters to another from chapter to chapter, you may jump forward or backward in time.

This jumping around makes it difficult to develop the characters. Just as you're starting to get a picture of one set of characters, the chapter ends. I suppose that's the tradeoff for a novel that spans centuries and that focuses on the history of the place. The place becomes the protagonist and all the humans become side characters. Well, OK, if that's the deal, then I can accept it if I love the treatment of the protagonist. But I can't say that I did. Paris did not come alive for me in this book.

The sweeping sociopolitical events and movements in French/Parisian history are handled in very broad strokes and in a labored and pedantic way. You get a clue as to the style right from the get-go, when the history of the Paris Commune is given to us by way of a turgid monologue delivered by a mother to her son. I know this background has to be provided somehow, but the way this read, I could imagine Rutherfurd's early draft saying "[insert history here]." I couldn't help but compare it to Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, where there is also a lot of historical information that is told by way of conversations, or one character telling another the history. I had just been listening to the audiobook and a character, Jack Shaftoe, tells his horse (really) some fairly lengthy history and it was both entertaining and educational; a huge contrast to this book.

Interspersed with the broad-brush historical descriptions, Rutherfurd focuses in on some selected events in a more personal way. One of these is his focus on the building of the Eiffel Tower, and Thomas Gascon's work on both it and the Statue of Liberty that M. Eiffel designed and Parisians built as a gift to the United States. This was probably the most dynamic and lively part of the book, and Thomas Gascon the most dimensional character.

Unfortunately, that only tends to emphasize how paper-thin the characterization is in nearly all the other cases. People behave in ways that Rutherfurd lays no foundation for; presumably it's just convenient for his plot. The characters seem like dolls that Rutherfurd uses to act out his stories, not like real people. I just didn't care about any of them. That became painfully clear in the middle of the book, when there is a long chapter about a love/social position triangle. I wasn't invested in the characters, because they hadn't been brought to life. The same is true for almost the entire 20th century, when Rutherfurd inexplicably plunges the story into a ridiculous soap opera, complete with love triangles, an adoptee searching for her birth family, sexual intrigue and so on.

What's more, most of this could have been placed almost anywhere. Paris is just window dressing. When a character goes to work as a model for Coco Chanel, we read virtually nothing about her work or Chanel. In other words, our protagonist, the city of Paris, is depicted as superficially as the human characters. An exception to this is when we arrive at World War II. Suddenly, the story becomes very Parisian and far less superficial. It's a shame the reader has to wait until the last 100 pages of the book for this transformation.

It's disappointing that Rutherfurd managed to write such a lackluster book about one of the world's most fascinating cities. I would have given the book 2.5 stars, rounded down to 2 stars, but because the World War II story was good, I'm rounding up to three stars.

For Lovers of Paris; For Lovers of Grand Historical Novels
By James Ellsworth
Edward Rutherfurd's 'Paris' is a wonderfully satisfying blend of the historical novel that combines fascinating insights into the physical development of the city with a sympathetic look at its social development as well. The plot of this sweeping (805-pages, 90 years, momentous events)novel stands on its own due to the vividness of the characters the author offers. Their lives are not atypical but neither are they stereotypical. Nor are the characters rooted in just one level of society: skilled workers, small merchants, large merchant/aristocratic families are represented.

Lovers of the city of Paris may particularly enjoy the results of the author's careful and extensive researches: examples include why the sculptor Bartoldi needed the help of the engineer Gustav Eiffel to erect the Statue of Liberty and the many ingenious ways in which Eiffel solved problems in erecting his own tower, since that time the signature of the 'City of Light.' Prompted by the author's descriptions, one can also revisit the wonderful upper chapel of St. Chappelle at the heart of medieval Paris. Many other delights unfold. Due regard is given to exploring both the city's high culture and its bawdy side as well. One meets Impressionist painters and Art Nouveau cabinet makers; one enters a bordello; one experiences a bit of the German occupation during World War II, including the Liberation of Paris, with a sly manoeuvre by Charles De Gaulle to thwart the Left. The novel ends with the new Paris Commune student rebellion at the end of Charles De Gaulle's Fifth Republic. The novel, then, mainly spans the period from 1875 until 1968, although there are flashbacks to far earlier periods in the city's life.

Rutherfurd's family has had long connections to Paris and to France as well as to Britain. He well knows the city he writes about--at least based on what we find on the page. I have been to France and to Paris from time to time and have read about it often and what this book offers rings true. Readers may well end up, as does one of the characters, wishing for a 'pied-a-terre' in Paris!
