About the Author
Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and have been transformed into three major motion pictures.

Gold Is At The End Of Each Chapter

This is a very different way of introducing yourself to the Psalms. It is also a very delightful experience to expand your understanding of the Psalms, Scripture, and Life. It does not attempt to be a "study of the Psalms." It is not definitive. But it does offer so very much more than any study I have read.

This (the Harvest Book) is the version of this booklet you want. Avoid, like the plague, the versions where this is reprinted as part of a larger volume, these larger volumes may look nice and have leather bindings, but they are nearly useless. That is because the page numbering must be as the original booklet. At the back is Appendix 2, "Psalms Discussed or Mentioned", and it is critical to opening up the full appreciation of this booklet. Also there is Appendix 1, "Selected Psalms", which has the text of the Coverdale translation of seven Psalms. This is the original translation of the Psalms to English, it is very poetic, and it is the version said and sung in Anglican churches for about 500 years Why does this matter? C. S. Lewis was Anglican, and that Church has worshiped using the Psalms for 500 years. One Psalm is said or sung in every service.

C. S. Lewis begins this booklet, "This is not a work of Scholarship. I am no Hebraist, no higher critic, no ancient historian, no archeologist. I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself." He then likens his book to two students solving problems together rather than consulting the expert teacher who was very likely to "explain what you understood already, to add a great deal of information that you didn't want, and to say nothing at all about the problem that was puzzling you."

I must say that it was impossible for me not to grow in appreciation for the Psalms as I read this booklet. I also grew my appreciation of Mr. Lewis, of course, and in my appreciation of art. Art in the largest sense, where one sees the art in counting, dance, music, language, the universe, chaos, ...

Mr. Lewis composed this as essays on themes is the Psalms, like Judgement, Cursings, Death, "The Fair Beauty of the Lord", "Sweeter than Honey", Connivance, Nature, Praising, Second Meanings, Scripture, and, curiously, "Second Meanings In the Psalms." These are arranged and progress as chapters, but I have found that randomly opening and re-reading an essay is profoundly satisfying and enlightening. Unlike so many studies where one can always predict what comes next, in Lewis' work there is always a delightful surprise coming in the next paragraph or page.

The ninth chapter, "A Word About Praising," is a great example. I just re-read it. He starts, "It is possible (and this is to be hoped) that this chapter will be unnecessary for most people. Those who were never thick-headed enough to get into the difficulty it deals with may find it funny." I suppose some may find it funny, but I am notoriously thick-headed, and I wonder, each time I read it, if I will actually understand the joke this time. When I finish, I know I do understand, but the joy I learned about praising has yet to translate into any laughter from me, though I can imagine an angel or two -- or Lewis -- snickering at me behind a folded wing or hand.

Read this for a love of language, art, history, or God. There is gold at the end of each chapter.

A few flaws in Kindle edition; Lewis doesn't deal with some important topics

There are some flaws in the Kindle edition. Among them:
p. 38 - "who has 110 belief": 110 = no
p. 120 - "referred to in Psalm no": no = 110
p. 123 - "the hero of Psalm no": no = 110
p. 124 - "Psalm no, with three other Christmas Psalms": no = 110
p. 137 - "In Psalm go (4)": go = 90

It's always illuminating to follow Lewis' thinking. Added to that is he's such a good writer and adds humor to his treatment of the subject. ("I don't want my dog to bark approval of my books.") But, there are some topics he doesn't address two of which are very important.

The first consequential topic is: how does the Old Testament (with its vengeance and cursings) fit with the New Testament (love your enemy). The problem goes back to Marcion whose cure was to say the God of the Old Testament was not the God of the New Testament. Lewis rightly assumes the superiority of the New Testament as a guide to Christian thinking and action, but does not deal with Old Testament passages where God commands Israel and individuals (King Saul) to wipe out entire populations including infants and domestic animals. Nor does Lewis deal with the Christian martyrs in Revelation 6 asking for avenging their blood "on those who dwell on the earth" or that rulers are servants of God who are supposed to punish the wicked. Lewis' basic answer is the Christian basic answer: forgiveness. But, other than noting that the Psalms often deal in the context of civil justice rather than criminal justice, Lewis does not deal with the difficult points on the issue of how punishment fits with forgiveness, and that is unusual for him.

A second important topic regards his view that scripture is written in different literary forms, and those forms control how the writings are interpreted. Well, yes. But, he skips over some inconveniences. He makes a distinction between books/passages he believes are mythical (i.e., not factual but carry truth). Among these are the Creation story (actually Genesis up through the Flood) and Job. But, nowhere does Lewis try to explain if the historical/prophetical writers knew when they were speaking about myth and when about fact. Did Ezekiel know (Ezekiel 14: Noah, Daniel and Job are bundled together)? Did Jesus know (Luke 11: Abel and Zechariah are the beginning and end of prophets murdered; Luke 17: His own coming will be in days like the mythical days of Noah)? Did Luke know (Luke 3 genealogy with lots of mythical people and historical people linked up)? Did the writer of Hebrews know (Hebrews 11: Abel, Cain, Enoch and Noah come before Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses)? If it doesn't matter, why not?

Lewis rightly reminds that the psalms are poetry. Poetry is not meant to be utterly factual. But at least once the Lord Jesus used poetic lines ("the Lord said to my Lord" in Psalm 110) as utterly factual and decisive and not just poetic license. Lewis deals specifically with that phrase and the Lord's use of it in Matthew 22, but skips over its implications in interpreting scriptural poetry or other scriptural literary genres.

All in all, Reflections on the Psalms, like most any Lewis book, is very good and will get you thinking.

This Edition is Very Poorly Written

The content is fantastic because it's C.S. Lewis but this particular edition was very poorly typed. There were errors on every page which made it difficult to read. The copy we purchased had no copyright information aside from "Printed April 16, 2016". It felt as if someone had taken a different edition and decided to copy it but did an extremely bad job. I will be looking for a different copy from a trusted source. I was very disappointed in this copy.

Three Chords and the Truth by Cas Sigers is simply phenomenal and breath taking. While it started off kind of slow, it quickly picked up as the action rose towards the climax and I became totally immersed in the novel. Just when you think it was going one way, it ended up going another. Three Chords dealt with honesty, loyalty, the test of friendships, as well as the level of maturity coming full circle in relationships.

Henna James, a nationally known singer, has to deal with conforming the principle ideals of her own and meet the standards of her record label to stay hip, current, and keep her next project from being shelved. Longing to stay true to herself and not giving into the label, Henna decides to take some time off away from music and visit her friend Monica in Atlanta. It is there where she meets Craig, Monica's younger brother. Things got off to a rough start through their first encounter as both Henna and Craig were both head-strong individuals. It wasn't long before the two got over the rough patch and began this little rendezvous as they made sure NOTHING would ever come of it. Daring to sneak under Monica's nose and see each other, every chance they were alone Henna and Craig made love. Trouble arose when Craig's ex-girlfriend Nia came to town giving him an ultimatum. Torn between the two women, after Henna made it apparent that there was no way a relationship would ever spark between the two, Craig's decision was obvious as he popped the big question to Nia and she happily accepted it. Not long afterwards, Henna discovers some news, that put their relationship in a huge predicament.

I definitely wasn't expecting all of the twists and turns throughout the novel. I'm not going to give the book away, but I must admit that I was shocked at Craig's demeanor towards Henna after receiving the news he wasnt expecting to hear at all. Even though he was 10 years younger than Henna, the way he wanted to be treated, respected as a man, and had this "age aint nothing but a number" persona, you would think he would have handled the situation a little better.

The characters were so complex which added another level of richness to the storyline and made it even more relateable. I found myself looking in the mirror as I was in a similar situation without the sexual encounters. I've know this guy for three years and while we never mentioned it, I knew that we both have feelings for each other. I remember a while back, he told one of our closest mutual friends as she tried to hook us up, that he didnt want her to come in between what we had. I was thinking to myself, negro we have nothing, we are just friends. Sometimes he throws out hints with our texts and conversations but never explicitly stated anything. Just like Henna and Craig, we are being non-chalant of the situation, because he wasnt making the first move,and I had my reservations of making the first move as I am stuck in the traditional mode of having the guy ask the woman out. After reading Three Chords and The Truth, I'm really contemplating stepping out of my comfort zone, strum my three chords and come clean. I really dont want a Fantasia "Truth Is" moment, or continue pondering if he has the same feelings and what can become of it if he does, if we keep playing with each other and not telling the TRUTH.

I highly recommend that you go out and pick up your copy of Three Chords and the Truth. You're guaranteed to be in for a great read full of surprises in which you will not want to put the book down.

Compelling and Addictive!

This book is great if you are on a diet because once you pick it up, you will not stop until it is over AND you will miss breakfast, lunch and dinner (depending on how fast you read)! All of the characters in the book are successful in their own way but very different but have a different approach to life. However, the story revolves around Henna, a successful singer who is forced by circumstance to make major changes in her career and her love life. This is definitely a love story but you never really know who is going to end up together or if everyone will just go their separate ways. I actually caught myself holding my breath a few times! I loved the insider peaks into a couple of controversial aspects of the music industry. This book reveals what can almost happen when people choose to be cool and protect their egos at the expense of their hearts. I also liked the fact that both the men and women in the story loved to cook. I hope somebody makes a movie of this one!

Pleasantly surprised by this fast read!If I had to compare it to anything, 3 Chords and the Truth flows like the movie Love Jones, in book form, with a musical twist, and that's a huge compliment! From page one heroine Henna James pulls you into her journey to self re-discovery, flaws and all. So many issues the succcessful single woman faces are touched on, from settling vs waiting for "the one", to asserting your position in business, and the dialogue was hilarious and real. The romantic plot twist, especially the major crossroad Henna encounters with Craig rings so true, I was holding my breath and holding back tears! If you're looking for a funny, real, fast read that leaves you feeling better about life and love's possibilities, this is your book!

You get what you pay for...

I thought this would at least have a chapter or outline or anything to help with a business plan. There is actually nothing here, the entire book could fit on a 1/2 page and gives great advice like... get a mentor, get a lawyer, buy software and other things from my company. Again, certainly my fault for thinking anything would be worthwhile for such a low price....

This "book" was a total disappointment. I put the word book in quotation marks since it is more of a 16 page link back to the 'author's site. What was written certainly didn't require 16 pages to say it. I downloaded the software, but didn't bother to open it since my Norton gave me a warning, said it was only created 25 days ago and could not totally say if it was safe. I imagine the software that is being given away will also require the purchase of something else to get it to actually function. I deleted the file.
