A Surprising Find - A Good Read

I read the reviews to this three book collection before I decided on getting them. After seeing some of the reviews I almost left this book (well all three) behind and moved on to look at something else. Despite my hesitation I decided to go ahead and get it, why not its free right?

Well it surprised me. I found myself flying through the pages and enjoying the story much more than I thought I would. Many people complain about the jumping back and forth between the present and the past, but I had didn't have that problem. The time jumps are clearly stated and happen only with a new chapter, it's not like it just changes all of a sudden. I would have been disappointed if I didn't get the glimpses from Elise's past. The past explains the present, both are important and in my opinion the jumps are well done.

The romance that simmers in the air is fun and complicated, which is exactly what it should be in a story such as this. I love how the romance is down played and the action never seems to stop. The past gives you just enough information to enjoy the present, but leaves you guessing and interested in what will happen next.

I will be continuing this series, and hope to dabble with some of the other stories that this author has written.

These books are just simply OK.

Book 2: I'm not sure what makes me unable to decide whether or not I like these books. I like the theme, the angels which are not exactly the benevolent guardians we think, the demons who enslave angels. I think my problem is with the main character. She is simply irritating. She is supposed to be tough and the best in her field, but she just makes stupid and illogical decisions, and almost dies in every fight. And, she is a bitch (not in that charming, funny way say, Dr. House is, she's just a mean bitch), and she has this tomboy image which is thoroughly ruined when she acts like a jealous idiot. I simply cannot relate to her.
Still, I can't give them up. There's just something that makes me read on, and not want to make me put down my Kindle. It's a strange love/hate-relationship between Elise and me.

Book 3: Elise get more irritating by the page. I had no connection to her whatsoever. In addition, this book was... well... I don't really know. I didn't really see the point of it. It didn't seem like a whole book, it seemed like the beginning (a very slow one, but still) of a book.
All the characters were frustrating, none of them seemed plausible.
It's really quite difficult to write a review of this book, it just seemed to lack a bit of everything that makes a book good. It was simply "meh".
And the grammatical errors (in all three books) didn't help one bit.

Extremely hard to keep track of the storyline

The author jumps back and forth between the present and past with no warning or necessity. It was extremely hard to figure out what's going on half the time. I managed to finish half of the first book after which I couldn't take the bouncing back and forth. It's hard to imagine the scenario in your head when you're not sure at what time point everything's going on, or where. Two stars for the effort. On the plus side, the fight scenes were pretty well described.

Will you choose greatness?

In Collins' new book he relies on the method you've seen in previous books like Built to Last and Good to Great. What's different in this one is he selected companies not just on their status or explosive growth, but because they succeeded in an extreme and uncertain environment. However, there's a caveat here: his research stopped in 2002, meaning there's no thorough analysis of how companies performed in the last 10 years (aka one of the most uncertain and chaotic business climates in decades). Collins and Hansen believe the future will be unstable and environments will be extreme for the rest of "our lives" (remember, these guys aren't Spring Chickens). So, they try to analyze company performance/greatness within the context of difficulty.

I always wish Amazon would show an easy-to-find Table of Contents for books, so I've created one for you here, complete with a summary of each chapter/section.

1 - THRIVING IN UNCERTAINTY
Collins and Hansen explain what the method for their book (what I described above), including the definition of a 10Xer, which is a company that beat their industry by 10 fold. Just 7 companies were selected as a 10X case out of 20,400 companies. The seven are Amgen, Biomet, Intel, Microsoft, Progressive Insurance, Southwest Airlines, and Stryker. They don't include Apple because their research lens of Apple vs. Microsoft focused primarily on the 1980s and 1990s (remember they stopped collecting data in 2002), which makes no sense to me. The present environment (the one in which Apple has exploded) is a far more difficult climate than the 80s-90s.

2 - 10Xers
Example of a 10xer is Southwest airlines, whose growth since 1972 is greater than that of Walmart, despite this period being a particularly harsh one for the airline industry. Anecdotes describe historic examples of 10xers and explains they aren't more creative, more visionary, more charismatic, or more ambitious, more blessed by luck, more risk seeking, more heroic, or more bold. The glaring fact that Apple is missing goes against this model, as Jobs and company were many of these things.

3 - 20 MILE MARCH
Here they introduce discipline as the key that sets 10Xers apart (hence the 20 mile march). 10Xers are focused on data with GREAT discipline and stick to their plan, like a 20 Mile March.

4 - FIRE BULLETS, THEN CANNONBALLS
10Xers were not more innovative than the control companies; indeed, they were considered less innovative in some comparisons. 10Xers scale innovation (firing bullets) and then the fire cannonballs once they know what's on target.

5 - LEADING ABOVE THE DEATH LINE
Explains "productive paranoia," the idea that you need to build cash reserves and buffers, bound your risk, and show flexibility in looking at macro and micro factors at play in your business and industry.

6 - SMaC
SMaC stands for Specific, Methodological, and Consistent. The more uncertain your environment, the more SMaC you need to be. A SMaC recipe is a set of durable operating principles and practices that create a replicable and consistent success formula.

7 - ROL (RETURN ON LUCK)
10Xers weren't more lucky or unlucky than comparisons. They had better ROL because they took full advantage of good luck and minimized the effects of bad luck. If you think about it, that's the real key to luck. Knowing when you got lucky and how to take advantage of it, rather than blindly thinking you walk on water (like so many businesses do).

Like Jim's other books, the how to is what's missing. An outstanding book for that (increasing your leadership skill set) is Leadership 2.0

Steady Marching Through Chaotic Times.

Jim Collins is at it again. Collins, along with co-author Morten Hansen and a team of over 20 researchers, spent roughly nine years trying to determine why some companies thrive during chaotic, uncertain and unstable times while other companies do not. If you have read some of Collins' earlier books, the theme in "Great by Choice" certainly won't surprise you. In "Built to Last," published in 1994, Collins, co-author Jerry Porras and their research team wrote about what makes for a "visionary" company, comparing a group of objectively and subjectively defined visionary companies with comparison companies that weren't so visionary. The authors would argue that their company selections were much more objectively chosen, and I wouldn't argue much with that claim. In "Good to Great," published in 2001, Collins and his research team analyzed a number of good companies that took the next step to achieve greatness, while a comparison group of similar companies did not.

In both of these two earlier books, as well in the current one (I'll get to "Great by Choice" presently), the authors conspicuously note how much better the subject companies performed, stock market wise, compared to the comparison companies. However, it is important to realize that Collins and his co-authors are not suggesting that you run out and invest in their subject companies. If you did that for the "Built to Last" companies, your investments would have included Citigroup, Ford, Sony and other companies that subsequently didn't set the world on fire. Similarly, from the "Good to Great" focus companies, Circuit City eventually filled for bankruptcy and Fannie Mae proved to be a major disappointment, in more ways than one. The point is that the reader can learn from what these companies did during their periods of success, regardless of whether some of the companies lost their way later on. Interestingly, one company, Wells Fargo, actually went from the comparison list in "Built to Last" to the focus list in "Good to Great." Okay, forewarned is forearmed regarding investing in the subject companies.

A couple of years ago Collins wrote another book, "How the Mighty Fall," which is a study of leadership failure, not success. This short book is a very enjoyable and informative read, but somewhat different from the books I mentioned above. All of Collins' books are interesting, hard to put down, and written with a passion for understanding the mechanisms of corporate success. When it comes to writing, I think of him as the Michael Lewis of management gurus. Collins is also an exceptional speaker, if you ever have the chance to hear him.

In "Great by Choice," Collins and Hansen select just seven companies (out of an initial list of over 20,000) as examples of those that have thrived during chaotic times. The companies are Amgen, Biomet, Intel, Microsoft, Progressive Insurance, Southwest Airlines and Stryker. These companies are called "10X" companies, given that their stock prices outdistanced the comparison companies by roughly an order of magnitude during the study period. Consider, for example, Southwest Airlines. During the study period (1970s through 2002), Southwest faced fuel price jumps, deregulation, labor problems in the airline industry, competitors moving through the revolving door of bankruptcy, and an absence of flyers in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Still, the company consistently grew and prospered. During this time, comparison company Pacific Southwest Airlines had an entirely different experience.

So how does Collins explain the different fortunes between the subject companies and the comparison companies? Simplistically put, the great-by-choice companies were much better able to differentiate between situations and factors they could control and those they couldn't. Also, they exemplified "fanatic discipline, empirical creativity and productive paranoia." If you have read Collins' other works, these terms have a certain familiar ring to them.

This wouldn't be a Jim Collins book if it didn't coin some new expressions, like the "big, hairy, audacious goal (BHAG)" from "Built to Last" and "Level 5 leadership" from "Good to Great." This time one of the main new expressions is the "20-mile march," which Collins uses to describe the very steady progress, through good times and bad, of the companies that thrive best during chaotic times, versus those companies that make exceptional progress during better times, but perform more poorly during tough times.

There is no such thing as a management guru with perfect insight or analysis, so I am not holding Collins to that standard. The real measure of a book such as this is more in its ability to raise important questions and through sound (even passionate) discussion help stimulate the reader to come to grips with important concepts. That's how people grow. If you have read and enjoyed Collins earlier books, chance are good you will like this one, too. If you are new to Collins, but have an interest in what makes companies tick, this book--along with his earlier works--are worth your consideration.

I'm sorry, I had a hard time understanding why everyone loves this book.

At 200 pages, you would think that it would be a great page turner, packed with incredible and useful information. Well, think again. I struggled to find a lot in the book that could be related to the average person's business. There were some interesting points and the triangle of suggestions was ok but as a business book.. there are much better ones out there.

INOCENCIA FÁCIL

Es fácil ser joven y bonita, es fácil ser adolescente y vivir en un mundo de libertad donde uno dispone de automóvil, teléfonos celulares, computadoras y toda suerte de ingeniosos medios de comunicarse con quien uno quiere. Es fácil aparentar tener una vida inocente y en particular, cuando uno se siente con derecho a hacer y poseer lo que a uno se le antoje. Bueno, al menos por un tiempo... parece fácil.
Pero un día uno se encuentra en una buena habitación de hotel con un cliente habitual que acaba de volver a enloquecer por nuestros encantos y suena el teléfono del hombre, él se pone a conversar y uno escucha algo que no debería haber escuchado, y el cliente la mira a uno, no ya con deseo, sino con alarma y sospecha. Por un instante, entonces, uno descubre en los ojos del hombre que las cosas no son tan fáciles como parecían, y un relámpago de alerta sacude el cuerpo y el alma... pero ya es demasiado tarde.
No he leído las otras novelas de Libby F. Hellman, así que éste es un descubrimiento. Inocencia Fácil es un clásico de novela policial contemporánea. Tiene todos los ingredientes y el ritmo de la novela de detectives pero se sitúa en nuestros días, en nuestra era de comunicación electrónica. Esto le da una inmediatez de crónica policial. Las situaciones que describe podrían haber salido en las noticias de la noche, lo que confiere a la obra una vivacidad que va más allá del suspenso y de las situaciones de riesgo en las que se mete Georgia, investigadora privada, la protagonista.
Las buenas novelas policiales son una reflexión involuntaria sobre las zonas más enfermas de nuestra sociedad y de nuestras mentes. Inocencia fácil no escapa a esta regla, y revela algo más que las eternas motivaciones de poder, codicia o locura que originan los crímenes: revela un mundo donde el materialismo y la falta de ideal de vida han alcanzado niveles tan degradantes que los adolescentes de familias acomodadas, no satisfechos con la vida de bienestar y lujos que sus padres les dan, recurren a cualquier tráfico que les reporte dinero, incluso el tráfico de sus propios cuerpos y de cuerpos ajenos.
La prostitución de adolescentes que no tienen el pretexto de la pobreza o del abuso familiar para sus actividades es sólo una de las lacras que Inocencia Fácil revela con crudeza. Niñas ricas que se prostituyen porque a ellas se les ocurre, por el sabor del poder que eso les da sobre los hombres pero principalmente para poder comprarse el más reciente blue jean o zapatillas de cientos de dólares que venden los centros comerciales de lujo que frecuentan con sus amigos. O el último telefonito de la manzanita mordida. O lo que venga. La novela de Libby F. Hellman habla, en este caso, más que un tratado de sociología.
Pero no nos perdamos en cosas tan serias. Acá lo importante es que Inocencia Fácil es una excelente novela de investigación y suspenso. Georgia, la protagonista, es una ex-policía que es "ex" porque tiene una gran facilidad para meterse en líos y ponerse por montera las reglas establecidas, y no lo puede evitar porque ese es su carácter, quijotesco e impulsivo. Así que ahora como investigadora privada va mucho más allá de lo que su cliente le ha pedido y se mete a resolver un caso que en realidad debería ser resuelto por la policía. Pero su sed de justicia y su ansia por descubrir la verdad pueden más que ella, y los problemas en los que se mete son nuestro placer, porque su investigación infatigable y su coraje insensato son los que nos tienen en vilo... y eso es lo que nos gusta, ¿no es cierto?, a los amantes del género... que nos fascinen con el juego de la inteligencia y que nos asusten con el juego de la osadía.
Les recomiendo esta novela, la van a disfrutar.
Veamos. Cerca de las canchas de fútbol americano femenino de un colegio de chicos bien, una de las alumnas, posiblemente la más admirada por su belleza y por lo tanto la más envidiada, aparece muerta a palos. Un joven retardado mental presencia el crimen, y sin saber lo que eso va a acarrearle, se acerca a la víctima. ¿Por qué la Policía y la Fiscalía prácticamente entre gallos y medianoche declaran que este muchacho es el asesino? ¿Por qué nadie recuerda que en el pasado ciertos ritos de iniciación de ese colegio de chicos privilegiados se han tornado criminalmente violentos? ¿Será porque por ahí cerca, con los demás, estaba la hija del propio Fiscal?
Georgia tiene mucho pan para rebanar y mucha suciedad que destapar antes de descubrir qué y quiénes están detrás del crimen, pero además no sabe que incluso el hombre que ella amó podría estar al acecho.

It reminded me of Terry Pratchett in a very foul mood

This is a tale set in a dark, gritty world, It reminded me of Terry Pratchett in a very foul mood. I was so caught up in the story line of the first City of Shadows book that I immediately read the second. Essentially, together they are one long book. I very much enjoyed the author's writing style. His story was grand in subject and in scope. And I came to care about what happened to his characters - Mr. Conner did an exceptionally good job of developing them. So much so that the seemingly pointless death of one of them was for me the biggest negative of the work.

There were a few issues. There were a couple points of continuity missed. The one that comes to mind is at one point the lead character throws his empty gun away. In the next scene, he uses the gun again. Characters are often badly injured or drugged and seem to slough it off more easily than would seem natural. And the amount of physical damage and sheer athletic endurance - let alone luck - needed by the main character was sometimes hard to swallow. My only other complaint, though a minor one, is that the book did contain a surprising amount of sexuality - more so than is generally common in this type of literature. Though not gratuitous, it did seem somewhat out of place.

Overall a very good work and highly recommended to anyone looking for a good, spooky cliffhanger of a read.

The many aspects of a dystopian world

Between the Atomic Sea, Nightmare City and City of Shadows series Mr Conner has created one of the finest and most prolific renditions of a dystopian world I have ever experienced. Each series comes at you from a completely different mindset and character sets with a few carry overs which loosely tie them all together. One of the very finest examples of a post dystopian steam punk societies I have had the pleasure of reading.
An absolutely must read for any fan of dystopian or steam punk fiction or just any aficionado of Sci Fi.

I have just recently started reading books in this genre and I am very glad that I decided to give this gem a try! The first sentence grabbed me and sucked me in and I just could not put this book down. I love Stevrin and his Whoresons and find the other characters very well developed and personable. The fly by the seat of your pants pace was very well written and the world in which Stevrin and his friends live was brought to life in my imagination.
