It's not "War and Peace," and that's OK. Really.
By Ulysses Dietz
Along with its prequel, "One Small Thing," M.J. O'Shea and Piper Vaughn's romance about hairdressers and families of choice embodies the very heart of m/m romance.
For all of my sadness that m/m novels never deal with anyone over 50 (except to dismiss them as old and either parental or pathetic), something that I've always mildly resented is the insatiable demand for butch strong men (understandably in the bodice-ripper model). Now while some object to the fey, girly-man counterpoint heroes that these books also seem to engender, I personally love the way these two women make their nelly protagonists (Rue in the first book, Dusty in the second) powerful, self-determined, and lovable.
I have known plenty of nelly guys in my life, and as I've repeatedly noted, I'm no model of butchness myself, and never was. I purposely picked up "One True Thing" because the specific historic horrors of this moment were getting to me and crushing my feeble attempts at Christmas spirit. And this book delivers.
I have to laugh at the critics on Amazon who demand pure logic and question every plot device the authors set up. Hey, folks, they're GAY ROMANCE novels! It's not War and Peace (which I have started three times and never finished).
Dustin Davis, 24, is pierced and bleached and slim and androgynous - but clearly a guy who's into guys and dreams of a prince charming. I may not believe in that bolt-of-lightning love thing, but I do enjoy reading about it, and the rocky path that both Dusty and Asher must travel before they reach home.
I like to believe there are guys like Dusty and Rue out in the world - and guys like Erik and Asher. In the young gay world today of emotionless sex and shallow value systems, I need to believe that true love still matters. O'Shea and Vaughn help me hold onto that fantasy.

A- rating.....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
As much as I read, one of the huge things that sets books apart for me is if I remember the details a month or two after I've read them. Unfortunately, that's never something that makes it into the reviews because I write my reviews immediately after reading the books. Well book #1 in this series, One Small Thing, was one of those that stuck...and stuck good. I remember specific scenes in that book. That NEVER happens, so I knew when book #2 came out, I definitely wanted to read it. While, not quite as charming as book #1 was (there can never be another love story like Eric and Rue's), this book definitely did not disappoint.
This book is about Dusty. He was Rue's best friend in book #1. The four of them (Dusty, Rue, Eric, and Alice) have just relocated to California. Dusty lives with Rue and Eric and it works fairly well for all of them. But he hasn't made many friends yet and a lot of the time feels like a third wheel to this little family. He has an instant connection with a guy that he bumps into on the street, but he's so flustered by it, he doesn't get the guy's name. That guy was Asher. What Dusty doesn't realize is that Asher has an identical twin brother named Archer. They may be identical in looks, but that's where the similarities end. Dusty ends up dating Archer (the wrong twin) and doesn't understand why those incredible vibes just aren't there. That's the first half of the book.
The second half shows Dusty and Asher as a pretty solid couple. I liked that. Usually the main characters find their happily ever after and that's the end of the book. But with this book, the reader gets to observe them and how they learn to deal with real life stresses and still make the relationship work. And these two guys are having to deal with some pretty harsh life stresses because Archer is still around making waves.
These two characters are very different, but I really loved both of them. Asher is a photographer trying to catch a break in California. In the meantime, he takes photos for the porn industry. He's a really stand-up guy which gets him in trouble sometimes as he really works with his subjects to help to get them to relax so they get the best photos possible (nothing sexual here, but it does open him up to some unusual friendships). Then there's Dusty. He's a hairdresser and definitely the more effeminate of the two. He's one of those people that gets taken advantage of just because he expects the best out of people. When someone is screwing him over, he assumes that he's just reading the situation wrong and gives them the benefit of the doubt. That leaves him wide open for a lot of hurt.
But the thing they both have in common is that they are both truly nice guys. They deserve a great happily ever after and it's so much fun to watch them find that with each other. This is one of those books that just makes you happy to read it. *happy place*

More, Please
By Andreams
Both this book and the first one, One Small Thing, are priceless. The writing is great, there is good flow and I love the story. Then there are the characters; there are three I want to pat on the head, one I want to shake some sense into and one I want to hit upside the head but somehow even the worst one is a tiny bit loveable. There is hot sex but it doesn't overpower the story.
This could logically be the end of the story line I guess, but I hope not. There's a bartender stranded back east, an evil twin who could use a little rehab and oh, yeah - a lonely hair stylist.
I love this team of authors and I want more, more, more - right now!
