Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2014: In Hollow City, Ransom Riggs continues the story that mesmerized readers in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. With their island home compromised, and Miss Peregrine trapped in her bird state, Jacob and the other peculiars flee into the larger world and find themselves in war-torn 1940’s London. On those broken streets, with "blacked out windows staring like lidless eyes," Jacob learns to trust himself, finds comfort in belonging, and falls over the precipice into love. As in his earlier novel, Hollow City is filled with eerily fascinating vintage photographs, and like a seasoned magician Riggs seamlessly incorporates them into a story already so well established in many ways that such a feat seems remarkable.--Seira Wilson
From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Listeners are hurled head first into Riggs's stormy seas, right where he abandoned us at the end of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. The children, now loaded into three rowboats, have narrowly escaped the dangers that invaded their island, rescued Miss Peregrine from a weight-driven submarine, and now only need to row more than eight kilometers to mainland England. It will take all of the children's peculiar abilities to even make it to the shore—which is only the first stop on their near-impossible journey. Narrator Kirby Heyborne's pacing is deliberate and measured, matching the real-time pacing of the book, which takes place over the course of only a few days. The voices of our Peculiar friends are as quirky as the characters themselves, and are exceptionally well done. But much of the magic of these books is lost without immediate access to the unusual pictures which inspired the story, even though they are available on an included PDF. Recommended for libraries with the first audiobook or as an accompaniment to the print version.—Chani Craig, Great Falls Middle/Turners Falls High School, Montague, MA
From Booklist
Hard on the heels of Riggs’ first hugely successful effort, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2011), comes this equally creepy sequel, which picks up where the first book left off. Jacob and the 10 peculiar children are now headed to war-torn London (the year is 1940), desperate to find a way to release Miss Peregrine from the spell that has trapped her in the body of a bird. But the doughty band is headed into terrible danger, for the metropolis is overrun by evil wights and their minions, the fiendish hollowgasts. Together, the villains have imprisoned all but two of the surviving ymbrines: the missing Miss Wren and the transformed Miss Peregrine. Can Jacob and friends find the former, and can she then help them? Ah, therein lies the tale. Like the first volume, this one is generously illustrated with peculiar period photographs that capture and enhance the eerie mood and mode. Fans will be pleased with this second volume and downright delighted to know that a third in the series is in the offing. Grades 6-9. --Michael Cart

The 2nd book to the peculiar series, has a lot more "action" than the 1st book, could not put it down, forever a fan!

This is the 2nd book to the peculiar children series, the 1st book was a bit "normal" and the ending is where things start to get peculiar. This book is full of all the peculiar children...and adults peculiars I've been waiting for. It is full of action and it is where Jacob starts getting into the full abilities of his abilities though truthfully his full ability does not come out until the last book (its awesome). His love for Emma grows, his relationship with the peculiar children gets stronger and he becomes the "leader" that helps save and rescue them and he kind of takes over for miss peregrine after she disappears. If you read the 1st book and found it interesting but a bit lacking or boring you will not be disappointed with this one because it where the action of them traveling the world (through loops so they don't age forward) in order to stop Carl and save peculiardom. This book is where I just couldn't put it down and stayed up late at night thinking just one more page. You will not be disappointed!

A bridge book to stretch the story into an unnecessary trilogy
By J'aime
2.5 Stars. The first book of Miss Peregrine didn’t blow me away, but it had enough potential that I wanted to continue the story. Unfortunately, the second book failed to do so. Hollow City reminded me a lot of the first half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – a lot of moving around avoiding bad guys with very little progress. For HP, that was okay because readers were brought to that point by 6 books of character development and exciting stories. Almost the entirety of Hollow City follows the children, that we hardly know, on the run from wights.
I read the first 50 pages of this book and then put it down for a couple weeks because it just didn’t pull me in. When I finally got back to it, I realized why - the photographs. Including weird vintage photos was a cool concept in the first book, inspiring some delightful characters. However, it becomes extremely limiting here. The author forces the narrative around the photos instead of around his protagonists. This means a lot of random encounters that don’t progress the plot, but allow another photo to be included. That’d be okay if there was some character development, but there isn’t. It’s mostly a cat and mouse game until the very end when the story is finally given some meat (and the focus narrows to Jacob & Emma).
Overall, I thought this was a disappointment – a bridge book meant to stretch a thin story even further. Readers can simply read the last 3-4 chapters and have all they need to go into the next book. I’ll read the last book because I’m curious to see where Jacob ends up, but I truly hope the author focuses on his protagonists and not the strange photos.
Final note: Usually I keep my reviews to the content of a book, but these deserve a little extra recognition. The hardcover editions of these books are really beautiful. The paper is thicker than standard, with small embellishments to the design and the size is a bit more compact. They have a weight to them that underlies excellent quality. I wish more books came this well done.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was
By Paula
When I read Peregrine's Peculiar Children, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I wasn't disappointed with Hollow City either. They're both exciting and adventurous fantasies, involving "peculiar children; all who have peculiar gifts or talents, and are the wards of mistresses who can change into birds.
One might think this would be better suited to children...and I think children would really enjoy the books, but I'M 59, and I really enjoyed the books. I'm now reading the 3rd book in the series.
