The Gypsy Hill Murders is the work of P. J. Thurbin, a new writer to the fictional crime scene. He has a unique and fast moving style that will appeal to the reader who likes mysteries that are in the genre of those by John Grisham and M.C. Beaton.
His book has all the ingredients that one would expect to find in a classic murder mystery. It is centered on an ivy covered Victorian house set within the campus of a modern University just outside London. A group of five academics find themselves embroiled in a series of vicious attacks that are linked to incidents that took place 100 years earlier.
The main character, Ralph Chalmers, a Professor of International Business, attempts to unravel the links between a 100 year old skeleton found on the site and a series of recent attacks in the University, while at the same time courting an old flame from his days as a student at Cambridge University. Inspector Linham and his Sergeant Wilson also strive to apprehend the villains and lend an air of authenticity to the investigations.
As the plot thickens, various members of the academic staff are seen to have motives that would also implicate them in the events that unfold. The atmosphere of jealousy and mistrust is stimulated by the character of the head caretaker, Jack Welsh, a retired army Master at Arms who has compelling reasons for wanting to unravel the mystery.
The book is fast moving in that the plot moves to Australia, France, Monte Carlo, and the world of diamond trading, while delving into the backgrounds and lives of the main characters. A final twist will leave the reader surprised at how greed and desperation can result in tragedy.
Thurbin manages to entertain by depicting the frailties of his main characters in all too familiar ways, while at the same time adding just enough intrigue to keep the reader turning the pages. This novel is for anyone who likes the thrill of a good mystery with plenty of action coupled with the element of surprise.

The worst book I've read in a long long time
By General Dogsbody
This has been the worst book I've read, or tried to read, in years. I really tried to read it, and I will usually finish a book, even if I don't really like it. But poor sentence structure, grammatical mistakes, spelling errors, and the flattest characters this side of a steamroller made it too painful to finish it. The more I read, the worse it got. I can deal with an implausible story, but this had NO redeeming features at all. I'm wondering where the good reviews came from, what other books these people have read that they would even consider any rating over a one star for this. I would have given it zero starts had this been possible.

Can't believe there are more in this series
By Betsy
I thought this might be a good book because of the references to the Great War, but I was quite disappointed in the characters, the multitude of victims, the poor writing, and the naivete of Ralph Chalmers. I was especially appalled by the author's reference to the movie, "Lawrence of Arabia". The Arabs called Lawrence "A-u-r-e-n-s" not LOWENS, and it is Omar Sharif, not Sherrif. Not a good beginning to a series.

Pleasant but not Intense Academic Novel
By drkhimxz
A pleasant light read without much that is intriguing. Unusual for a mystery, there is not much of a puzzle, not much effective investigation, and no hero or heroine. The central figure, Professor Ralph Chalmers is a likeable chap (well it is an English novel), we are told a fine scholar, definitely a 'try to get along' fellow, an appealing sort of a guy, but he is simply 'there' for other people to bounce their ideas against. It is an academic novel in which our hero is the acted upon by the chief administrator in his life as well as by his friends but not the instigator of action. Of course, the real life of an academic, and the author does capture a bit of this, is rather dull to outsiders being concerned with learning often quite arcane matters (to the layman) and interacting with the 'consumers' of his services (students) in ways that can only be judged decades down the road....if then. In this first book of the series, there is a death labelled 'accidental' early in the book and, we learn a bit later, there is the hope of finding a long buried treasure, but from there on nobody seems to have any sort of handle on the why and the what of what seem to be disparate events happening to different people for different reasons. The writing is of a placid, certainly not of intense, sort, and the few central characters neatly characterized although not terribly interesting.
It's difficult to emerge with a recommendation on the book. I found it, as I have said, pleasant but not intensely involving. I have already acquired some others in the series because there is a distinct role in my reading for such a book on occasions. I should think it will appeal to any mystery story reader when they do not want to be drawn into an emotionally stimulating book. I would not commend it, of course, to any who lean to the hard-boiled school or who need a protagonist who is in the market for 'hot' ( I think that is the term today) men or women, or scenes in which there is an effort to 'sex up' the book.
