The Other Guy, by Cary Attwell

Emory James is, by his own admission, not the type of person the adjective exciting would ever deign to touch with a ten-foot pole. Cautious, reserved and staid, however, all crowd around him like best friends. Still, he gets by -- or at least he gets by up until his fiancée dumps him at the altar. Out of spite, he takes a solo honeymoon to Thailand, where he can pretend to be someone better than himself for a little while. In meeting Nate, a fellow traveler, Emory slowly discovers how to stop pretending.

About the Author
Cary Attwell lives in Seattle, Washington, where it rains and rains like the dickens, except when it doesn't. Fretting occurs on a daily basis, and small acts of idiocy are perpetrated with stunning proficiency much more often.

And what a novel it was
By Amazon Customer
I'm the proud owner of some over 300 m/m romances and yes I know much of the genre is written for women by women because hey ... we find two hot men admitting to vulnerabilities and learning to be tender with each other ... just more than a little heartwarming. But often we lose much of good storytelling to mindless 50 shades of type writing. What I enjoy about much of the men who write in this genre is that we often see a solid story within the romance with fully developed primary and secondary characters. In short, they write much the same way they live (if they are gay). Their sexuality is simply a part of the larger picture. So too with The Other Man. A very well thought out story with developed characters. We really know and understand the characters and the world they live in and why they make the choices they do.

Now don't get me wrong, it's a romance but without much of the torrid and lurid love scenes YET you sometimes feel the love story more in this book that reading about two men getting it on and being lubed, stretched ... etc when really the act should be about the love and feelings and not always about animalism (which trust me has it's part and I'm a big fan). This story, however, is so well told that you get pulled and sucked in and rooting for the characters despite their flaws. Great read. But I did have to take off one star for lack of at least one romantic if not torrid love scene.

just wonderful, this story
By bill m
every review here says it all - this is a wonderfully written story. Intelligent, funny, erudite - prose so good that it defies rating in the Amazon system. The m/m genre has become so popular and so filled with mediocre stuff that it's a caricature, a cliche - just another form of Harlequin romance, without the busty women but plenty of porn style men, and about as interesting as watching pectoral muscles flexing. Okay, so women are the buyers of the bulk of m/m stories, I get that, but do the publishers choose on the frequency of the cut-and-paste sex scenes, ignoring that there's no story there? If so, they probably wouldn't salivate at The Other Guy, a story of substance, with believable characters, wit and - as another reviewer put it - polished writing. Polished to a luster, this one is. If you're a gay man reading in this section, TOG should be one of your favorites, if not your go-to story - it's excellent. Whoever Cary Attwell is, he/she has shown talent and real author chops with this one. Please try this - you'll be really glad that you have.

Funny
By Nishka
I actually laughed out loud quite a few times and I never do that. Out of hundreds of m/m romances I've read over the years, this one gets the second place in humor. Emory can be frustrating, self-deprecating and sometimes downright sad, but at the same time he is that geek in all of us. The guy who tries hard to be a normal, well adjusted person because no one had ever told him that it's irrelevant to being happy. Each time he fails, it becomes harder to try again. By the time he meets Nate, we can almost believe that Emory is ready to throw in the towel and accept what comes his way without any of his preconceived notions of normalcy. But that hardly makes a good novel. Instead, Emory does what any other human in his position is likely to do. He sticks his head in the sand. And if you can picture him like that, you will likely be tempted to give him a swift kick in the behind. Because through this entire story, Nate is THAT guy. You know which guy I'm talking about; the one you never find but keep hoping to. That guy we all know exists somewhere but we're never lucky enough to come across one. Don't get me wrong, he's not a perfect, hollow statue. He's as real as Emory despite the fact that we don't have an access into his head. He's funny, sweet, sexy and possesses infinite patience, which as it turns out, is quite necessary to get through to someone as stubbornly set in his ways as Emory. All in all, I throughly enjoyed this and I recommend it without a hesitation.
Warnings/spoilers
No sex scenes, piss your pants humor (seriously, wear diapers), a main character you just might wanna throttle, a sexy, SEXY photographer, and an ex girlfriend who should be permanently tied to the crazy train that took her out of the town in the first place
