A Gentle Life Course

Dallas Lore Sharp is one of the better nature writers from the early twentieth century. Perhaps because he was an English professor or perhaps in spite of it, his writing is easy, at hand, and humble. There is no textbook address to his readers, but a passionate, engaging and witty retelling of what he has observed in nature. If you are looking for a technical manual, this is not your book. In his own words: "I do not mean a sixteen weeks' course in zoology, or in botany, or in Wordsworth.I mean, rather, a gentle life course in getting acquainted with the toads and stars that sing together, for most of us, just within and above our own dooryards. It is a long life course in the beautiful things of living nature-..."
That is exactly what makes this book so enjoyable. We learn nature gently from a man who has given his eyes and ears to it and shares this knowledge with us. We observe muskrats by moonlight, hunt for persimmons in winter with an opossum, solve the mystery of the missing tooth and search for a buzzard nest.
The Lay of the Land would make a great addition to a home school nature study applicable to all ages.
The book is printed like a photocopy of the original and the only illustrations are the black and white chapter page drawings. This, in my opinion, does not deter from the quality of the writing and maintains the historical integrity of the book.

I read this book for school, and I found it enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book for nature lovers.
