A worthy review tool for those of us with rusty Spanish

This is without a doubt one of the best paid Spanish readers available for Kindle to-date. In a world where one often has to settle for 40-odd page pamphlets, finding a 500 page reader with solid content feels great. From what I've seen, it also happens to be one of the better ALARM method readers out there.
To be honest, I wasn't so sure about this book at first, but getting into it, I quickly began to enjoy myself. The entire reader is actually an endearingly quirky novella about a detective's investigations at a bank. While not an epic work of literature, the story kept me entertained and manged to boost my reading comprehension. Stylistically speaking, The text itself features a mix of formal and informal language contexts rather than tending towards one or the other. This is important for those of use who like being able to process and produce language in context. Best of all, the extensive(excessive) vocab lists and English translations for each passage make the learning experience feel natural. There's no need to wrap your mind around mind-boggling grammar explanations just learn things the natural way...in context! That said, the text assumes the reader already has a basic grasp of most verb conjugations.
Even though the author states that the book is for pre-intermediate learners, I would recommend that you look at the first chapter in the sample and decide if it suits you. I went through four years of highschool Spanish and three semesters of college Spanish (that was 5 years ago) and felt like this was a perfect refresher for me. I only needed about 10% of the vocab list but what I really got out of the reader was (suprisingly) more confidence in daily conversation.
If I had one complaint, it would be that probably one-third of the contents of this book are vocabulary lists. Even so, without the vocab lists this book still has around 5X the amount of content that most other Spanish readers on kindle offer.

Interesting and fun way to improve my spanish

I have been studying spanish on my own for about 2 years. This has really helped me to put the words together in sentences and make the learning more interesting by reading stories. Having the English translation verifies that I am really understanding what I am reading.

A good further step in renewing rusty Spanish

Having loved reading the first volume in this series of bilingual Spanish/English readers (First Spanish Reader for beginners bilingual for speakers of English (Graded Spanish Readers) (French Edition)), I was really looking forward to reading this volume as well. And I was not disappointed. This volume does indeed go deeper and farther in reviewing many more words and all the common tenses, while telling a single, sometimes humorous story.
My one frustration in reading this volume on Kindle was the length of each chapter made it difficult to page back from the story to the start of the chapter where new terms were defined, or back from the English version at the end of the chapter to the same spot in the Spanish version. Chapters were shorter in the first volume, raising it one notch above this volume in my opinion, and leading me to also want to read the other two volumes at that level (First Spanish Reader for beginners (Volume 2) Bilingual for Speakers of English (Graded Spanish Readers) and B00DDTDV56), though this volume is currently a better value price-wise. My other tiny quibble with this volume is that its story doesn't entirely finish, suggesting perhaps a companion volume is planned.
That said, this is still a very good book, and helped immensely in restoring my decades-old high school and college Spanish.
