Among the Best of LeVeque

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with this author, but it's books like this one that keep me coming back.
It has the best of LeVeque, good pacing, well researched, and interesting.
The characters are real and developed in this novel and don't suffer from the stereotypical characters that I have disliked in other novels from Ms. LeVeque.

A Lovely Romance

I really enjoyed reading Tevin and Cantia's story in While Angel's Slept. As someone else mentioned, this novel was more focused on internal conflict to the H/h's relationship rather than political intrigue, warring, etc. which were more in the background. Both Tevin and Cantia were easy to like and I sympathized with their varying difficult circumstances. The beginning was appropriately sad, as the heroine is bidding goodbye to her husband only to find out of his demise a short time later. While Tevin was very understanding/thoughtful to Cantia as she goes through the stages of grief, I did have a hard time believing they could fall in love only a few short weeks after Cantia has lost her beloved husband. However, I do know things were different back then and people tended to "get on with life" out of sheer necessity a lot quicker than we might approve nowadays. That aside, the love story was sweetly engaging and I was very happy to see these two get their happy ending, because they obviously had a deep affection for each other. Another great story from Ms. Le Veque!

review of while angels slept

Another new and wonderful tale written by Ms. Kathryn Le Veque! I have purchased 17 of her novels including this book and I just adore almost everything she has written! Each one she writes keeps me so entranced and part of the story I can't put any of them down! I immediately want to start and finish every single one of the books she has written. All of the characters have such depth that you can't help but feel something for them. This story also has a secondary account in it too just like another one of her books "The falls of Erith" and there is no issues separating the main and secondary tales. I wouldn't mind if she also wrote the story of this account too.
This book starts off with our stunning heroine Cantia Penden watching her husband Brac Penden getting ready in their castle to fight a battle for a bridge. After the battle most of Brac's men come back alive except for Brac who comes back dead. Cantia while grieving for her husband meets and is comforted by the hero a valiant knight and a viscount to boot Tevin du Reims. While Tevin comforts her he becomes close to her, having a deep affection and falling in love with her. But trouble brews between the couple Cantia father-in-law grows crazy after his son Brac is killed attempting to not only hurt himself but Cantia as well. Tevin locks up the father-in-law to protect Cantia. Cantia also falls for Tevin too but they can't marry because Tevin is already married. He is unsure of the whereabouts of his wife since she left him and his daughter for another knight. Tevin hears that his lecherous cousin the earl of east anglia is also coming to visit who is very lustful to any female. Tevin decides to send Cantia and his sister Val who dresses like a knight but is pretty much all woman someplace safe to protect them. While doing so the unscrupulous knights escorting Cantia and Val turn rogue and decide to have Cantia for themselves. Thankfully a group of outlaws saves them taking Cantia hostage. Meanwhile back at the castle Tevin and his cousin fight. Tevin accidently ends up killing him becoming the next earl. He decides to save Cantia from the outlaws and does. While leaving the outlaws the leader of the outlaws decides to perform a kindness for them and finds Tevin's wife who is very sick. Tevin, his daughter and wife make peace with each before she dies. Tevin and Cantia get married and live out their happily ever after.
The secondary part of the story concerns Tevin's sister Val and one of Cantia husband knights Myles de Lohr. Val has been fighting and wearing armor like a knight with her brother but after a skirmish ends up getting hurt. In doing so has to wear dresses since it painful to wear armor and Myles takes notice of her, falling in love with her and marrying her. By the end of the book Ms. Le Veque actually explained some of the family history and how some of the characters are related to each other which I really loved learning about some of my favorite characters from other books!
The reason I rated this book 4 stars was I just had a hard time imagining and picturing in my mind's eye Tevin having long red hair, a beard and mustache for a knight. I didn't really mind the long hair and facial hair but it just seems incongruous of a knight. When I imagined him as the earl then it seemed more fitting on an earl than a knight. I however did love this story, will keep it in my library to read again and definitely will read another book from Ms. Le Veque!
