Charlie Beckham is a rising star among federal prosecutors until, on the morning of the most important court day of his career, a deranged homeless man turns Charlie’s life upside down with a single word. He calls Charlie by a secret nickname known by only one other person in the world—Charlie’s brother Jake, who went missing thirteen years ago. Could the homeless man have information about Jake’s whereabouts after all these years? Is it possible that the long-haired, bearded vagrant actually is Jake? Charlie has a hundred questions but the homeless man disappears before Charlie can ask a single one.

So begins Charlie’s search for answers, and for his brother, a search that leads him down Boston's darkest streets, into its blackest alleys, and, finally, into its criminal underworld. But if Charlie wants answers he'll have to get them from some of the most feared and ruthless people in the city.

Review
Named to Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2013.
"A prosecutor and a homeless man team up against a murderous conspiracy in this rollicking thriller... The two settle into an entertaining dynamic as ... Hankins surrounds them with a crackerjack cast of bristling thugs, weaselly lowlifes and beady-eyed feds, and he ties the story together with pitch-perfect dialogue, mordant humor and action scenes poised exquisitely between menace and chaos... A complex, entertaining thriller." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Impressive debut novel!
By Patti L
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by James Hankins. The plot had more twists and turns than a roller-coaster ride. It was suspenseful and entertaining and had quite a few surprises for the reader. Hankins has a talent for very detailed descriptions that allow the reader to visualize every scene vividly. I can easily see this story translated to the big screen! The main character, a lawyer named Charlie Beckham who is searching for his beloved brother thirteen years after Jake's disappearance, and his unlikely accomplice, Bonz, a homeless man beset by mental issues caused by an unsavory past, are compelling and likeable even when engaged in tough, violent situations. The story is told through Charlie's eyes and his ruminations are witty and engaging. I loved that it was set in Boston and the surrounding towns and can vouch that all were accurately portrayed. This is the kind of book you cannot put down until you figure out the resolution. I cannot wait to read more work by James Hankins, a very promising author.

Engaging Crime Thriller By A Fresh New Voice
By Kevin Joseph
Brothers and Bones, an ambitious crime thriller by lawyer-turned-author James Hankins, leads with a clever hook and follows with a twisty plot that few veteran writers would dare attempt. Although Siracuse and his mafia cronies seldom deviate from the stereotypical and elements of the story push the outer limits of the believable, Hankins succeeds in penning an engaging tale that will keep you turning pages well into the night.

The hook is set when a homeless man calls Assistant U.S. Attorney Charlie Beckham a nickname that is known only by his older brother Jake, an investigative reporter who disappeared long ago while investigating a story that involved Siracuse. Charlie, already long-obsessed with solving the mystery of his brother's disappearance, compromises his professional reputation to track down the mysterious homeless man, a guy named Bonz who was tortured to the point of madness by Siracuse's thugs but slowly begins to regain his sanity and recall important information about Jake.

When Siracuse frames Charlie for a murder, he's forced to go on the lam with Bonz in a desperate attempt to clear his name. Charlie's only hope, it seems, is to locate an audiotape that Jake hid before he disappeared, which is believed to contain evidence that could put Siracuse behind bars for good.

The early chapters of the novel drag in places and Hankins' dialogue and narrative have a tendency to be a bit "on the nose", but he hits his stride by the middle and builds to a climax that rivals other mainstream authors in this genre. So if you are looking for a fresh new voice in the vein of Harlan Coben, I recommend that you give Hankins a try.

"Sometimes paranoia' s just having all the facts." - William S. Burroughs
By Cheryl Stout
Charlie Beckham is an Assistant U.S. Attorney and a member of the Organized Crime Strike Force Unit. He is an excellent lawyer, is engaged to his boss's daughter, and the s*** just hit the fan.

He has a very important case to try and instead is running around trying to find a very odiferous homeless man (who just might know something about his older brother, Jake, who disappeared thirteen years ago).

Bonz (pronounced like Fonz), mobsters, great word pictures, fast moving narrative, hammers and nails, attorneys - all thrown together in the beautiful city of Boston.

"Brothers and Bones" is the second book I've read by James Hankins. Drawn was the first of his novels that I read and I'm hard-pressed to choose a favorite.
